Flaggy Shore

A wave-flattened limestone shoreline on Galway Bay, immortalised in Seamus Heaney's poem 'Postscript'.

Worth the wander

The Flaggy Shore is a stretch of flat limestone pavement along Galway Bay in the Burren, between New Quay and Finavarra Point, named for the flagstones once quarried from its rock. It was made famous by Seamus Heaney's poem 'Postscript', which describes driving this shore 'in September or October, when the wind and the light are working off each other'.
