Banna Strand

The lonely Atlantic beach where Roger Casement waded ashore from a German U-boat on Good Friday 1916, hours before his capture.

Worth the wander

Banna Strand is a long Atlantic beach in north Kerry backed by dunes up to 12 m high. It is historically significant as the landing place of Sir Roger Casement, who came ashore from the German submarine U-19 on 21 April 1916 in a failed attempt to land arms for the Easter Rising, and was captured nearby soon after. A monument near the dunes commemorates the landing.
